In less than a decade the Republican Party has gone from a legitimate contender of the black vote to the party of white people, in the eyes of the black community.

The Black Split With the Republican Party, From Ebony’s Perspective

In 1962, Richard M. Nixon wrote an article for Ebony titled, “What Republicans Must Do to Regain the Negro Vote.” Five years later things had changed so much that an Ebony writer wrote, “At no time since the Republican Party ended slavery has it been so flagrantly anti-Negro.”

Goldwater won that argument against Nixon, lost the eventual presidential race, and destroyed any chance the Republican party had of appealing to all Americans.
